Private Finance Initiative hospital contracts are awarded and managed by 1 local Trusts. Contracts use private funding to build and maintain hospital buildings. Contractors often provide support services, typically including cleaning, catering and portering, often referred to as hotel services. Department of Health supports 76 such operational PFI contracts in England, costing £890 million a year. Thirty-three per cent of Trusts are dissatisfied with at least one of the services they receive under their PFI contract. Sixty-seven per cent report satisfaction with their contracts, and the majority report consistent or improved performance over time.
