Modern Slavery has been described as the greatest human rights issue of our time. Modern slavery is an umbrella term that encompasses slavery, servitude, forced or compulsory labour and human trafficking. UK public sector has an annual expenditure of £255bn in 2016/17 with external suppliers. Government suppliers – including sub-contractors – must comply with all applicable human rights and employment laws in the jurisdictions in which they work. Government has the opportunity to use its extensive buying power to help mitigate the risks of modern slavery.
