Government Procurement Card was introduced in 1997 as a convenient and cost-effective way to make low-value purchases. ‘Travel’ and ‘Hotels and Accommodation’ are among the most common categories for which the Card is used across government, comprising 41 per cent of total spending. Departmental controls in the five departments we examined were generally designed satisfactorily and operating as intended. The Cabinet Office is undertaking an exercise to address these inconsistencies. The government is making progress towards greater consistency and consistency, but the current system still contains risks.
