New Zealand, Finland and Bhutan were able to successfully contain the initial waves of Covid pandemic by taking a Wellbeing Economy approach. The economic narratives of the past functioned to undermine our capacity to overcome one of the greatest crises of our time. The first, essential, problem with this narrative lies with its definition of freedom, which cannot be equated with the right to harm others or to impose the negative consequences of one’s own behaviours on others – but includes responsibility toward the community, a principle at the heart of public health policies.
