  5. National Audit Office – Investigation into the Management of PPE

The National Audit Office investigated the supply of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Previous reports focused on how the Department procured PPE and raised some concerns around the management and distribution of PPE that had started to arrive in the UK.

Demand for PPE rocketed in England from March 2020, when NHS and care workers, together with key workers in other industries, started to require protection from patients, colleagues and members of the public.

At the same time, the global supply of PPE declined as a result of a fall in exports from China (the country that manufactures the most PPE).
