  5. Measuring and Mitigating GHGs: Maize

There are millions of farms globally, each using a unique set of practices to cultivate their products. The relative GHG emissions of producing the same product may differ drastically depending on how and where it is grown. 54% of production goes toward livestock feed, 12% is used for human food, and 20% has non-food uses. In many developing regions, such as Africa, Asia, and Latin America, maize is an important food crop. The default economic allocation (for the maize grain) used in this paper is 88%.
