  5. Global Witness – Last Line of Defence

Global Witness produced an annual report on the violence and murders of individuals which highlights the disproportionate impact on indigenous peoples fighting against the destruction of their homes, local habitat and environment which is directly associated with climate change. Sitting at our desks, managing procurement activity in the UK it is both shocking but somehow feels very remote from our lived experience.

‘This report, and our campaign, is dedicated to all those individuals, communities and organisations that are bravely taking a stand to defend human rights, their land, and our environment. 227 of them were murdered last year for doing just that. We remember their names, and celebrate their activism.’

The report directly links climate change and inequality.

‘The core truths about violence against land and environmental defenders mirror what we know about the climate crisis itself:

  1. Its impacts are unequal
  2. Business is responsible
  3. Governments are both causing and failing to prevent it’
