Why the EU needs to adopt ambitious legally binding food waste reduction targets. The IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Land highlights that, from 2010-2016, global food loss and waste equalled 8-10% of global GHG emissions and cost the world about USD 1 trillion per year. In 2021, the EU imported almost 138 million tonnes of agricultural products from outside of its borders, worth a total of €150 billion, while wasting a higher amount – 153.5 million tonnes – of food each year.
