Destitution in the UK has alarmingly risen, with 3.8 million people, including one million children, affected in 2022. Despite 75% of these individuals receiving social security, the benefits prove inadequate, emphasising systemic issues. The research, conducted by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, reveals that destitution rates are particularly high in regions like London, the North East, and North West. Migrant communities and black-led households face disproportionate impacts. Additionally, problematic debt, especially related to housing and utilities, burdens many, and there’s an increasing reliance on foodbanks. The state’s support remains limited, pushing families and communities to bear the brunt of the crisis.
